“I am waiting for the church to be as outraged about gun violence as much as we seem to be about who pees where in a Target bathroom.” -Nelba Marquez-Greene (mother of a 6-year-old who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary school mass shooting)
Congressman Jim Himes led the way in making a statement. While he expressed that he in no way wants to criticize moments of silence for the victims of mass shootings, he could not stand by as the government was silent on the issue of gun laws. He walked out of a moment of silence in Congress to draw attention to cost of the government’s persistent silence—human life.
Statistics around the world show that government regulation does reduce gun violence. No one wants to take guns away from hunters, we need responsible hunters (as most are) to speak up alongside mourning families and those who are not gun owners.
Most of us eat meat once in a while, and meat is the product of killing an animal. Hunting, therefore, is in some way part of our everyday life. However, any good sporting hunter will tell you that there is no need for semi-automatic or automatic military-grade weapons on the hunt. And certainly no gun should be accessible without consistent regulation. Government needs to listen to the citizens of the United States not to the power and money of the NRA.
I, like many responsible citizens—hunters, parents, church-goers, politicians, children—I am a voice of “we the people”, and I want to say that we have had enough. We will not let the NRA confuse us or make us afraid. We will not be bought by those selling fear that we all need access to automatic military-grade weapons.

“The deadliest mass shootings have one thing in common — the weapon of choice — assault rifles like the AR-15 used in Newtown and Orlando (and Aurora and San Bernardino).” – Shane Claiborne

Guns are made to kill people and animals. Guns do kill people. Non military grade guns can be safely used by trained and regulated responsible citizens for hunting and recreation. And no one needs an automatic weapon to hunt.
Let’s stand together not apart.
